Frequently Asked Questions Q: How much does Resnet cost per semester? A: Resnet costs are included into the semester housing bill. There are no additional costs included with this service. Q: Do I need to purchase security/antivirus software for my computer? A: You do not need antivirus software, as PSU will supply the software upon registration. You will NOT be protected from viruses until you register and install the software. In order to insure maximum performance, you should uninstall your old software before installing the PSU software. Firewall and spyware software are not provided through this installation. Free firewall software can be found at www.zonelabs.com . Spyware software can be found at www.safer-networking.org and www.lavasoft.de . Q: Can I use wireless in the residence halls? A: Yes! Wireless service is provided in the residence halls at no extra cost. However, you cannot use the wireless connection in the halls until you register your computer through the wired connection in your room. Then you can register your wireless card through GUS using these instructions. After that, you are ready to go! Q: Only MacOS and Windows are supported. Can I use a different operating system? A: Yes. ResNet is a straight forward Ethernet connection. The operating systems listed are for support reasons only. Unfortunately, ResNet Technicians may only provide support for MacOS and Windows systems. However, ResNet Techs may still support cabling or other questions not pertaining to the system software. Q: I'm having problems with my computer not relating to my ResNet connection. Is there a place on campus I can take it to be fixed? A: Yes! We have an on-campus repair facility at Whitesitt Hall called Gorilla Geeks. Q: What if I move rooms? A: The ResNet registration system will register your computer with the PSU network. Moving that computer to another residence hall port will not effect its use. Q: Why can't I hard code my IP address? A: Because ResNet users gain IP addresses via DHCP, one resident hard coding an IP may cause problems for another resident. ResNet asks that users please use DHCP for IP address configuration. |
