Buying Advice

Networking a Macintosh computer is a breeze. Just follow the two steps below and you will be surfing the web in no time. One difference to make sure and note is that the PSU ResNet requires Macintoshes to use a DHCP server to obtain an IP address. This is different than Windows machines that use a DHCP server.

Follow these steps for quick setup of Macintosh computers running OS9.2.2 or lower:

  • Check IP Settings Because the PSU ResNet uses a DHCP server to handout IP addresses, it is VERY important that you not use a hard-coded IP address.
    1. Under the "Apple Menu", go to "Control Panels" and select "TCP/IP" from the list.
    2. In the TCP/IP window that comes up, make sure that your computer is set to use its Ethernet port.
    3. Next, be sure your Mac is set to use DHCP server for its IP information.
  • Enable File Sharing. ***Note: This step is not necessary to gain access to the ResNet. Completing this step can create security holes in your system. If you plan on sharing files with other ResNet users, ALWAYS protect your files with passwords.***
    1. From the "Apple Menu" go to "Control Panels" and down to "File Sharing."
    2. Click on the "Start/Stop" tab at the top. Set your owner name and password -- This should not be given to ANYONE. This login will allow the user to see and write to any file on the computer.
    3. Give your computer a name on the ResNet. It is suggested that you use your first and last name as your computer name.
    4. Click the "Start" button under the File Sharing section. It may take up to two minutes to register your Macintosh for File Sharing...please be patient.
