As noted on the main ResNet page, we are dropping all support for versions of Windows except for 2000, XP, and Vista. This decision was made after Microsoft dropped support and development of security patches for Windows 98se. Since one compromised/infected ResNet machine can cause service outages for others, this new policy was enacted to provide better service to all ResNet users.

More information regarding product life cycles can be found at Microsoft.com.

If you would like to make comments or voice a complaint against this new policy, please contact Mike Sullivan at (620)235-4215 or sullivan@pittstate.edu.

Minimum Requirements FAQ:

Q: If I buy a new computer do I need to purchase a Windows Vista Upgrade through Pitt State?

A: No. Computers sold today come with Windows Vista already loaded. It is a good idea to set the computer up at home and download/apply any critical and security patches before joining ResNet; but this step is NOT required.

Q: Forcing this upgrade on students seems like Pittsburg State is using this an excuse to make more money off students. Is this true?

A: No. Neither Pittsburg State University or Pittsburg State University Housing makes any money from the sale of software from e-Academy. The software is offered at the lowest possible price with no money returning to the university.

Q: Do I have to buy a new computer to join ResNet?

A: No. You will need a computer that meets minimum requirements for either Windows 2000, XP, or Vista. Microsoft maintains sites dedicated specifically to helping customers determine if their machine will run different versions of Windows.
Windows XP
Windows Vista

Q: Do I need a wireless card to connect to ResNet?

A: No. While ResNet does offer wireless connectivity, there will still be a "hard-line" (wired) connection.  Those students that purchase laptops/notebooks with 802.11b/g (WiFi) capabilities can use the free wireless network in the academic and residence halls across campus.

Q: Can I run my own wireless router or access point?

A: No. Those found running routers will be asked to remove them from ResNet.

Q: I'm looking for a laptop/notebook and I see a Centrino processor. ResNet minimum requirements state I have to have either a Pentium or Athlon. Does this laptop/notebook qualify?

A: Yes. Centrino is a marketing term from Intel for a CPU, chipset, and wireless network interface combination. Its an effort to remove some of the complexity out of buying a notebook computer.
Read the wikipedia entry for Centrino for more information.
